Water Purification System

An easily accessible machine with an innovative display.

Project Vision

Inuvai is an expert division of Fresenius Medical Care that offers innovative filtration systems tailored to the needs of different industries and laboratories. Desall and Inuvai product design contest required a new product of a case and interface for an innovative purification system dedicated to water treatment.

Our team was made up of five industrial designers who worked together biweekly to create our unique design. We organized and scheduled meetings that would follow a product schedule.

Requirements

The system will be made up of a number of units which may be combined when the device is installed. The contest will take into consideration two separate confirgurations, small and large, or a large modular configuration that will fit the small configuration.
1. Filter unit: it shall have easy access from the front of the case through a main standard inspection door. The door shall be easy to open and may also be transparent
2. Hydraulic unit: it shall have easy access from the back of the case through a service inspection door.
The system must feature an interactive interface system that is simple and able to easily communicate the state of the system for technicians.
There must be a mouting plate with adjustable feet designed to moved by a forklift.
The electronic box must be accessible through the main standard inspection door or through a dedicated service inspection door.
There must be a standard inspection door on the front and back.

We designed a filtration system with an interactive LED light display and futuristic body while also being easily accessible for technicians.

Inspiration Boards

Our team was inspired by futuristic aesthetics and created a unique hourglass shape to create length and and movement. We focused on a high-tech aesthetic to emulate the INUVAI brand. We kept the same type and color palette for the final design.
Concept Sketches

Following the ideation phase, we created concept sketches to find the right shape and form for the optimal product. After several rounds of sketches, we designed a small and large configuration for the case that features different materials with an hourglass shape.
Competition

Our competition did not have the interactive requirement that our design fullfilled. We created a system that also fit the aesthetic of the brand by making a clean and futuristic product.
Innovation

To create a unique hourglass shape that illustrates length and movement, we designed a honeycomb pattern that displays the states of the product system which is separated by a metal frame. The LED display on the sides of the product help communicate by changing colors.
Materials and Manufacturing

We chose ABS plastic for the case, acrylic for the front window, and a textured chromium for the frame around the window. For the manufacturing process, we chose Pressure Forming for the large pieces and Injection Molding for the smaller parts. For the case's color, we chose a cool-tone blue, Base Hex #104A8E. We chose a carbon fiber gloss finish for a clean and futuristic look.
