Oasis

The Portable Clean Water Purifier.

Project Duration: 12 Weeks | Fall 2020

Project Vision

The prompt for the project was to create product that connects to your smartphone. I used my personal Apple iPhone X as reference. Before sketching or model making, we were tasked with brainstorming scavenger hunts to create products from everyday items. Shapes or certain items caught my attention, and upon using these products for my own design, their original purpose became nonexistent. I focused on form shape and different ideas of how I could filter water, such as through plants, or beads, or through wood, or have a similar purpose like a sprinkler. Next, we brainstormed our designs on post-its using simple parameters such as “something that makes drinking water.” This is the direction I chose for my final design.

Product Function:

My product, the Oasis, a portable clean water filter, helps individuals without clean water available in their immediate area that want to both test and filtrate their water source. This filter has a built-in system to collect toxic water and filter it into drinking water. The device is compatible with smartphones in order to visually see the toxicology report of the water that is stored in the device.

User Persona

Name: Kayla

Residence: North Dakota, USA

Occupation: Data Analyst

Hobbies: Playing with Daughter at the Park, Hiking

Kayla lives close to the North Dakota Keystone XL Oil Pipeline that will be active next year. She wants to be prepared for the eventual pipeline’s malfunction, which already occured once in 2016 with a similar oil pipeline. 4 years ago, she was not prepared and suffered financially and physically from drinking the toxic water. Now that she has a daughter, she wants to be able to protext her as well. She wants to be able to test her water with ease and filter it out if necessary to create drinking water for her daughter.

I designed a portable, clean water filter that helps users access pure water safely without risking their health.

Innovation

Inside the main body, there are individual layers that filter the water in seven methods. These methods include:

  1. Micro Ceramic Filter to take out sediments, heavy metal, rust, bacteria, and parasites.

  2. Ceramic Filter with chlorine prevents bacteria growth, and ionizes water molecules.

  3. Ion Exchange Resin removes metal ions, and overall softens the water.

  4. Anti-Bacterial Silver Ion disinfects and sanitizes water.

  5. Alkaline Medium neutralizes pH level effectively.

  6. Kinetic Degradation Fluxion Activated Carbon Layer oxidizes and reduces chlorine levels.

  7. Membrane Medium discards colloids and bacteria.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

Having an app that allows users to easily check results of their water, interact with other users, and pin locations of where they have tested water allows for an active community to exponentially grow.
